July 2018

This month I spent a fortnight in Balmain, as my Partner, Desley, was in St Vincent's Private Hospital undergoing and recovering from heart surgery.  Balmain, when I last saw it back in 1966-68, had a lot of tired cottages, industrial lots, abandoned yards, wharves and junk.   Now, lots of the cottages have been renovated and the waterfront is a delight.  I would regularly walk (morning and evening) from the Balmain Ferry terminal around Morts Bay to Ballast Point (look on Google Maps).

Another place I spent a fair bit of time whilst in the Navy was in refit at Cockatoo Island, so I spent a few hours wandering around there.  It is now administered by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife.  It has some old convict and soldier barracks, and the dry dock that my ship spent time in is now part of a marina.

Travelling from Balmain to Darlinghurst by ferry gave me a lot of opportunities to see Sydney from the harbour, and to walk through the Sydney CBD.

Back home, I was tasked to provide a couple of photos of local landmarks for July's challenge.  I chose the Telstra Tower on Black Mountain and the Australian War Memorial.

June 2018

Sorry for the late posting, but I have been in Sydney for the last 14 days while my partner has been undergoing heart surgery.   The surgery was a success and we are now back home.

Prior to the surgery, we had to visit Sydney for an initial appointment with the surgeon so he could review and explain what would happen.

May 2018

The last month of autumn has been and gone.  This year was a very good year for autumn colours in Canberra, although some of the trees looked a little 'starved' because of the dry conditions.

As always, the photos are in order of taking - from the beginning of the month.  Apologies for the inordinate number of autumn colours, but they were rather spectacular this year.

The dry, warm conditions through April convinced our Kings Park Bottlebrush that it was again spring, and it flowered profusely.  This brought in a large number of Rainbow Lorikeets to feed.  Mixed with the flock of Rainbow Lorikeets was a small number of Musk Lorikeets.

Had a day's drive to Goulburn via the Barton Highway, Gunning and Breadalbane traversing the Old Hume Highway.  We stopped off at Rowles Lagoon on the way home to give the dogs a longer run.  There was still water in the lagoon, as I discovered when flying the drone over it, but birdlife was very sparse.
