This month I spent a fortnight in Balmain, as my Partner, Desley, was in St Vincent's Private Hospital undergoing and recovering from heart surgery. Balmain, when I last saw it back in 1966-68, had a lot of tired cottages, industrial lots, abandoned yards, wharves and junk. Now, lots of the cottages have been renovated and the waterfront is a delight. I would regularly walk (morning and evening) from the Balmain Ferry terminal around Morts Bay to Ballast Point (look on Google Maps).

Another place I spent a fair bit of time whilst in the Navy was in refit at Cockatoo Island, so I spent a few hours wandering around there. It is now administered by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife. It has some old convict and soldier barracks, and the dry dock that my ship spent time in is now part of a marina.

Travelling from Balmain to Darlinghurst by ferry gave me a lot of opportunities to see Sydney from the harbour, and to walk through the Sydney CBD.
